Open letter to Rodvik (Humble) Linden

Hi.

My account name is Imnotgoing Sideways.  My friends refer to me as Immy.  I am nearing my 4th year in Second Life.  I rarely miss a day.  I have logged in from my home and my office in California.  I have logged in from Japan, Korea, Viet Nam, Australia, Taiwan, and China.  I have 2 premium accounts.  I own an estate sim with a homestead on the side and around 1/6th of a sim in various mainland parcels scattered about.  I was a Second Life Mentor.  I am a New Citizens Inc. volunteer.  I build, script, play, dance, chat, help, advise, organize, buy, sell, and entertain.

One might conclude that I find Second Life rather interesting.

I have been a member of many groups.  The most prominent being Second Life Mentors, New Citizens Inc., Builder’s Brewery, Mental Mentors, and the now terminated Woodbury University.

I have many alternate accounts.  Around 20, last I checked.  Not any one of my accounts has a valid suspension or termination on record.

I am not free from controversy.  My sense of humor doesn’t recognize common social taboo.  I am quite outspoken in respect to provocative subjects involving virtual worlds, the real world, and the internet in general.  As such, I have had my fair share of online ‘battles’.

Now that you know more about me than you probably wanted to know, I would like to address an issue regarding a specific group of individuals.  Namely, the Justice League Unlimited.

I have long been vocal against their actions and practices.  They have spent much of their time in SL overstepping their bounds as customers of Linden Lab.  While on the surface they appear to be comic book super heroes in costume, they are little more than the minor internet personalities as anyone else you would meet in Second Life.  Their aspirations do not match.

Initially, my perception of the group was that of governance abusers.  In discovering a situation they deem inappropriate, they would crowd source Abuse Reports in order to force the hand of the governance team Lindens to strike.  When they can’t find a specific TOS violation to report, they pick from the “easy” ones in order to get a response on their target.  Most typically being ‘underage’ and ‘sexual ageplay’.

So, already they have created an environment in which they are empowered to have nearly anyone in Second Life suspended and/or terminated for any reason or no reason at all.

More recently, there have been incidences of ‘hacker’ activities which reveal the inside operations of this group.  An inside that they’d prefer nobody ever find.  They have amassed a database and wiki of information about Second Life residents.  Connections to real life information, alternate accounts, and inworld activities are all logged in a fashion which represents their targets in a negative light.  My own avatar account is included in this wiki and has been for a while.

So, in spite of my lack of abuses, reputation as a helper and volunteer, and overall contribution to Second Life; I am a “Griefer”.

But, this is not about name calling.  This is about how they react to my presence inworld.  Moreso, how they react to many people inworld.  Because of this, many people are at risk of falling victim to their abuse of governance inworld.  I have observed people suspended and terminated for violations which are totally unrelated to their inworld activity.  I have friends who’s accounts remain terminated for reasons unknown or indecipherable violations.  I may be sounding paranoid, but, I am deeply concerned over if I’ll be next.  I have developed this concern over observations spanning years.

I’m well aware that the simple answer would be to report the JLU members for their actions and I have done so.  Many people have done so.  With all reports being landing upon deaf ears.  In addition, their own logs report social connections within employee ranks of Linden Lab which they leverage in order to influence a bias to their operations.

Former Lindens such as Plexus and Socrates have been documented as contacts they can use in addition to current Lindens on staff, namely Soft Linden being the most visible example.  The Justice League have been abusing this relationship to manipulate many incidences to lean in their favour.  In result, their chat logs contain many incidents of boasting, gloating, and posturing in regards to these inroads with Lab staff.

Linden Lab cannot continue to hide these facts in silence.  While the targets have been named ‘griefers’ the real griefers have established themselves a position of judge, jury, executioner, and untouchable.  While people are being suspended and terminated over false claims, the JLU have been able to boldly violate the TOS and CS without sanction.

This group and the people that make it up are mired with delusions of grandeur.  Some grandeur provided to them via inroads within Linden Lab support staff.  They have been caught, over and over, in acts of stalking, logging, lying, identity theft, and conflict of interest violations.  They have labeled decent Second Life customers as criminals.  They have targeted harmless Second Life customers as griefers.  They have purposely falsified information while targeting whistle-blowers and dissenters.

They have established an environment in Second Life in which customers, once aware of them, will often decide to financially back out of the grid.

Your customers are screaming.

What may have started as a popularity contest is now a lifestyle affecting war of words.

I was there at your keynote speech at SLCC.  I heard you speak of retention and dealing with griefers.  I was the one who hounded you to get a forum avatar up at the SLU forums.  I heard the mantra of the audience, saying “He really gets it”.  I believe you get it.  As a paying customer, I boldly request you get with it.

I am Imnotgoing Sideways

I love Second Life

I enjoy Second Life

I contribute to Second Life

Please, don’t let these thugs manipulate Second Life.

Thank you.

Immy

More Primmy Than Primmy. (^_^)

Took a peek at the SL forums this morning and spotted a confuzzled dood who’s trying to figure out what kind of bug PE has… (^_^)

Well*sigh* Hi, i found a not so nice bug within the equivalence calculation… i’ve created a meshwindow with the equivalence of 1 prim, now for my house i need a second and so i rezzed another one… but here comes the bug, when i link the windows the properties show me 2 prim equal to 1 prim and the object even took only 1 prim on the land.. shall not bother me… but when i link the windows with my house(made of 28 prims) the properties and even the land info are showing me that the house is equal to 295 prims and they are taken on the land. Ok easy and fastest solution to not link the windows.

Maybe someone could explain that so i can understand this, pls

That’s perfectly normal.  Not a bug. (^_^)

What you have is what I’ll call “Fractional PE” objects.  I’ve been experimenting with them since the open beta.  Basically, a properly optimized simple mesh with simple physics will have a PE of less than 1. (^_^)

But, the build dialogue treats the PE as an integer.  So, from having a PE from 0.01 to 1.00, the display PE will be 1. =^-^=

Get two mesh objects with a PE of 0.50 and link them together, the resulting PE will remain 1 after summing and rounding the linkset. (^_^)

I checked with Charlar and he stated that this value will always be rounded in order to avoid confusing people.  So, at this point, it’ll be up to the uploader to indicate the fractional value of the PE, if it’s important. (^_^)

You’ll find it while uploading.  When you get your upload quote, look at the far lower left of the upload dialogue, you’ll see PE displayed in a 0.00 format.  This gives you an opportunity to record the resulting fractional value in addition to simply cancelling the upload to pop back in to your mesh app and cleaning some details up in order to reduce the number. (^_^)

Less is more! =^-^=

Here’s the fun part.  As long as we continue to have this fractional PE, it’ll be a boon for mesh building materials.  Sort of like, reinventing prims.  There’s no super good reason to make an entire house out of a single mesh.  Right now, we have Box, Prism, Cylinder, Sphere… as prims.  Well, imagine building a house with Wall-2windows, Wall-1door, WindowFrame, DoorFanWindow “prims”… Nearly all having fractional prim values. =^-^=

Prefab makers, the old texture stores, and inworld builders with no mesh experience will still have great tools to work with, if not better. (^_^)

Now… To address your GAIN in PE.  I’m assuming the rest of the house is made of regular prims.  Be it hollow boxes and various other things to be as prim-efficient as possible.  Well, here’s the fatal flaw.  Prims are the most inefficient building materials on the grid. Really, they’re lag nightmares by default.  How else can we explain why games with apparently 10x the detail can get 100FPS on computers which can only get 10FPS in SL? (>_<)

So, when building with mesh, while exersizing efficiency and reducing the overall prim count… When linked to a regular prim build or adding scripts, the lag is taken into account and the overall score is changed. (^_^)

My mindset is; while building in prims, the prim count is an old an innacurate measuring method of resource usage.  Mesh and PE is more along the lines of “LAG POINTS”… A far more reasonable score for the effect each linkset has on the server, network, and client.  Reduce ~that~ number by making more efficient prim-replacing mesh components, and watch lag fade away. =^-^=

Understanding understanding. (^_^)

Just got an update from a friend about Google’s shut down of their free translator API. (^_^)

Really, things can stay the same.  There is a solution if not many. (^_^)

https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/STORM-1577?

http://googlecode.blogspot.com/2011/08/paid-version-of-google-translate-api.html

You know?  That don’t sound so expensive.  Surely the Labbies have some back-end stats on how often the translator is used.  I mean, I would. (O.o)

Bing is an option.  LL copping a deal with the Googlieites could get it done.  Online real time translation in SL can live on. (^_^)

Google has announced their pricing for continuing the use of the Viewer 2 and other viewer-based translators in SL.   I doubt anyone will actually go bother with this because of the hassle and costs for one person to pay for their usage.

Oz has updated the definition of STORM-1577  for open sourcers to fix it so Google Translate can be continued to be used in viewer 2 and so on…  Looks like with all the hassles involved, that end users have to log in to a google checkout account, pay (with a credit card 20 bucks), copy and get a key, etc etc….    that nobody will bother to do this.  Someone who does will no doubt give out their key which is violation of Googles TOS, as I understand it.

Seems like eventually some bloggers will be up in arms when they realize they lost the ability to chat to anyone for free because the cheapskates at Linden lab won’t pay 20 bucks for a million keystrokes.  A million actual translated keystrokes.

Thats not counting those who have it off.. people that actually use the durn thing and have it on would count, and rarely do I find someone who even knows it is there.

In any case, Google has announced their pay policy – it’s $20 per million characters LOL.   Cheap cheap cheap… that’s two thousands of a cent per peck at a keyboard.

If you assume that millions of keystrokes actually pass thru the Linden clients a day, and some proportion of them actually have translate turned on, I doubt this would cost very much for the Lindens to absorb.

I been quite quiet lately, ain’t I? (o.o) … and, Justice League Unreasonable! (=_=)

I dunno.  If anything, I been moody and much of time is spent throwing emo-blargh at my friends. DX

Either way, I’m still here.  I’m working up the energy to do another Frigg’n Stuff video.  Just gotta get out of my ‘bleh’. (-_-)

But, so, like, my computer.  It totally blew a couple weeks back.  Oh, maybe I can blame that? (>.>)

Anyway…  Win7 got really grumpy.  It reached the point where it would load the login screen then black out, then load, then black out, then load…. You get the point. (^_^)

So, not finding a solution I just up and re-installed the OS… Which was gladly easy and kinda made things generally more stable than before. =^-^=

One-by-one, I’m putting my old apps back.  I’ve always kept my files on network storage, so, no loss there.  Things are falling into place again. (^_^)

Has anyone been keeping up with the JLU mess lately?  I sure has heck have.  There’s quite a bit of bitterness on my end over their deeds.  Honestly, the whole IP address collection racket doesn’t even bother me.  I know what they can’t do, so, I meh in their general direction. (^_^)

But, this whole ‘leak’ business.  It happened once before.  And, it further goes to show what they’re really doing. (=_=)

On my own part, they’ve expanded their page on me to note that I moved my blog to Darkly-cute.com, add some information saying my gramma monitors my web usage…. WHA!?! (O.o) … information about my visits to therapy… EH!? (o.O) …

And… “Illegal sex acts”… DUDE!!! W-T-F!? (O_O)

This is the one that bites me.  Of the numerous falsifications found in my “record”, this one is the most heinous.  (=_=)

But, you know what?  It stands as an example of who ~THEY~ are.  What I see is the words of a person who will stop at nothing to assure himself that his actions are justified.  (-_-)

All of this in the role of a superhero. (=_=)

But, they’re getting that wrong, aren’t they?  (O.o)

I mean, which superhero maintained logs of his opponents?  Not just villains… Opponents!

Which superhero kept a name list with black&white comparison between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ people.

Which superhero worked in the degree of privacy that they had to slink away and cover the cameras when their efforts were put to question?

Which superhero exaggerated and falsified information on his opponents in order to villify them.  Remember, not villains… Opponents!

Now… How much do the actions above sound like attributes of villainy? (=_=)

Point: made. (>_<)

Really.  The only word I can come up with to describe this crowd is ‘cowards’… Yet another villainous attribute. (=_=)

At this point, it looks as though they’re preparing to go down in flames.  They’re defending their actions to those that they’re acting against.  What do I see?  I see a protection racket and stalker community.  (-_-)

Really, how can anyone expect to be protected by a group that can’t even cover its own butt? (>_<)

The mornings after. (^_^)

I meant to do a Frigg’n Stuff video on Monday, but, I was still nursing a grumpy new install of Win7.  So, there went that morning.  (._.)

My biggest problem being that my motherboard was discontinued half a year before I bought it and support stopped not soon after.  So, no Vista/7 driver support. (>_<)

Then I was all extra busy yesterday, so there went that morning. (>_<)

Now… I’m abusing my lunch break. =^-^=

But, anyway… SLCC… I had a frigg’n BLAST! XD

It was fun to meet all those people I’ve seen in pixel for so long.  Along with seeing that our personalities don’t shift very far at all between online and offline contact. (^_^)

One regret… I didn’t go to the WU party.  Still too shy.  I still need my antisocial alone time in the evenings.  (._.)

Besides that, I attended a buncha panels.  I messed with Charlar during his mesh presentation.  And, I relayed the identity panel in text to the inworld attendees thanks to a cut stream courtesy of the cowards in the Justice League. (=_=)

… Which reminds me.  I gotta ask for a copy of that video.  =^-^=

Over all, it was a wonderful and relaxing experience and a rare chance for me to see people outside my house.  (^_^)

Oh, and the best part… No Prok! XD

But, now, I’m hooked.  Given the positive experience this time around, I’m sure to go to the next one, and the next, and the next… =^-^=

Thank all y’all for making SLCC11 a great experience and ALL HAIL SQUISHIEHORSIE!!! \(^o^)/

Will mesh replace prims? (o.o)

The question came up on SLU.  Feeling good about what I said, I’m gonna copypasta it here too. =^-^=

Nearly all of the mesh objects I’ve made so far yield a fractional PE. While rounded to 1 on their own, linking them begins to reveal their actual value. (^_^)

Approaching mesh with that in mind, I see a large opportunity in the building components market. Things like chairs, doors, stairs, fences and such which have benefited from ‘precise’ sculpties in the past will make for very effective mesh items. (^_^)

I cite an example of a flight of 16 steps I’ve made. They were formed from a plane, no rear faces, one UV map face, and a physical bounding box of a cube which follows the stair path. (^_^)

These stairs, alone, are 1 PE. Already, a sculpt solution would need 2 to be cleanly physical. (I say cleanly, because I know how to manipulate the sphere. Still, it’s a sphere and not a flat box surface). I modeled 3 LOD levels and let the client junk up the lowest one. So, in fact, they’re actually 0.5 PE, or something of the sort. (^_^)

So… I’ve linked two together and placed regular prim boxes on the sides in order to visually close in the assembly. Yield: 1 object, 4 pieces, 2 prims. PE, being a reflection of the amount of lag the item contributes, has determined that the assembly is negligible in part that the sum of the whole assembly only relates to 2 prims in server, render, physical, and bandwidth impact. (^_^)

No, mesh won’t replace anything. What it will do is provide people a tool with a broader range of detail and efficiency for various items. They match up with prims almost perfectly. And, when used properly, can and will contribute to better looking builds and reduced lag. (^_^)

The proof is sitting in my front yard @ Morbidette. (^_^)y
