A knowing leader (^_^)

So, I been at SLCC today.  I went to the two mesh panels and heckled as good as I can.  Had lunch with a few SL friends who I’ve met in-person for the first time.  And sat in while Rod gave his speech. (^_^)

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, and many other people say it; Rod gets it! (^_^)

Actually, to me, he spoke quite like an engineer and planner.  He didn’t have the PR-ish glaze over words that exec. staff typically have.  Best of all, he wasn’t afraid to be honest. =^-^=

While he directly avoided any talk about billing.  Come Q&A time, when questions about Open Source, the Viewer2 UI, and IP theft; he was quite frank.  (^_^)

Actually, he was pretty much quite even with the people that dislike V2.  He just out and admitted that he didn’t like it and found himself confused. “Fair enough!” XD

A really fun question was when someone brought up the old Community Gateway program.  He had no bloody clue what that was.  So, someone spelled it out to him, saying stuff about how the old communities worked and functioned as alternative start points to the Linden provided sims.  “Well, that’s a cool idea!” >8D

Here’s hope that this little quip is enough to convince him to revisit the idea. =^-^=

All in all me and the peeps around me came out of his speech feeling pretty good.  I gotta say I’m still confident.  Linden Lab appears to have quite the knowing leader in their ranks at the moment.  =^-^=

Namaste

Please do take care on your extended break, Brinda.

http://brinda-benares.blogspot.com

Namaste.

When I saw a link from Twitter leading to a blog post entitled “Namaste Brinda”, Nothing else had to be said.  I immediately felt the devastation.

http://lalotelling.squarespace.com/likeitis/2011/8/11/namaste-brinda.html

During my second runin with Prokofy, at Sutherland Dam, I had arrived because of a forum invitation saying that there would be a discussion about online anonymity.

I had arrived rather early.  Typical of my fashion.

A few other early-birds already had taken their seat.  One of them being Brinda Allen.  She immediately and kindly engaged me in conversation which we shared our ideas of how the conversation would go.

I had what I’d call a 20% chance of being summarily ejected because, at the time, Prok had a dislike for me that I didn’t quite grasp yet.

It didn’t take long.  I was ejected.

I followed up in IMs with Brinda.  Both of us agreeing what will be, will be.  She offered friendship and that began a series of IMs and infrequent meetups here and there.

We weren’t day-to-day friends.  But, when she approached me, it was all in kindness.

I’ve gone to a few parties she hosted at her estate.  She so frequently came to me for technical information in SL.  And, she introduced quite a few people to the classes I teach for NCI.

She enjoyed being helpful and applauded anyone else’s efforts to help.

She was very supportive of those who did the same.

After a while I found her blog where she spoke of her happenings and goings on as the days went by, always including photos of places from around the world entitled “Where we come from” and always ending with “Namaste नमस्ते” as a graceful return to the ins and outs.

Her avatar was tall.  Very tall.

Here eyes were big… Huge, even.

Her heart was no less enormous.

She will be missed.

To Brinda,  Namaste.

Hype Engine V3 (=_=)

Okay, come on… (=_=)

When Windlight hit, we got version 1.19. (^_^)

… I don’t quite remember what 1.20 gave us… (O.o)

When we got a major fundamental change in UI along with some new features, we got 2.0. (^_^)

But… Now…

COME ON!!! (=_=)

I’ve been in this client for over an hour now and I can’t find enough change in the UI or functionality to justify revisioning it beyond 2.9… (=_=)

Well… Maybe one thing. =^-^=

It’s mesh capable. (^_^)

So, I can see it already… XD

“NEW!! SL3.0 WITH MESH!! OOH LOOKATTHESHINY!!” …. Heh. (=_=)

But, really.  That’s how I see it.  Come the release of mesh as a non-beta non-RC item… They’re surely going to want a hype engine to push and promote it as much as possible. (=_=)

But, really?  Quite cheezy, if you ask me. (=_=)y

3, 2, 1, 0.75… (^_^)

Here’s yet another mesh to replace prior prim work.  (^_^)

no images were found

A friend had 3 rounded steps made from 3 cylinder prims.  As we were looking into the prim budget of the sim, the curiosity came as to how much we could reduce it.  (^_^)

This is what I plan to do a lot of.   Reproduce pre-existing prim builds in order to improve efficiency and save on prim counts.  =^-^=

So, what did I achieve here?  Well… For one… a PE of 0.75.  Just on sheer face count alone combined with 3 LOD models and a hand-made physical form, I made what was once 3 prims less than a prim! XD

Also, like my picket fence, I took advantage of the capabilities of UV mapping to provide surfaces which would take on pre-existing inworld textures just fine.  =^-^=

So… Project is a success! (^_^)

I’m sure other mesh builders will feel free to make super-high-detail beasties and epic fine-grain meshes to do things prims and sculpts have never done before.  As for me, I’m going to make simple utilitarian items to replace prims with far more efficient items.  (^_^)

Gonna munch me some lag! (^_^)y

Oh… Just for the heck of it… Here’s a copy of the Blender project for the steps. =^-^=

Immy gets meshy. (^_^)

Mkay, got my butt into early mesh stuff.  I remember that I used to say mesh was going to be easier than sculpties and far more efficient.  Holyfriggncrapinablender was I right! XD

So, early stuff… I wanted to see what it would be to replicate and possibly even improve upon something I already have inworld.  Something easy… Something like the picket fence around my yard. =^-^=

So… Here… =^-^=

Now, all’s not perfect.  Details are kinda like this….

Lower Fence: 4 prims (2 sculpted + 2 box)
Physics Weight = 4.0
Render Cost = 138

Upper Fence: 1 mesh (5 prim equiv)
Physics Weight = 0.4
Render Cost = 32

Sooooo… For 1 more prim, I get a far prettier looking fence with less lag.  Why I lost that prim, I dunno.  Server load?  (O.o)

Either way, the new fence stays square to the tips instead of coming to toothpick points.  The boards are UV mapped to different portions what can be a simple pre-existing flat texture… So, they mostly look like different and separate pieces of wood.  And the physics bounding box is actually a box, just one, instead of two boxes and two crushed spheres. (^_^)

While I can probably get quite grumpetty over it costing me 5 prims for something that’s 75% more efficient… It’s a pretty fence.  I just may keep it*. =^-^=

(* Or re-up-load it once beta is over and the possibly delete everything… )
